Office Policies

How our Pediatric Office Works

Red Canoe Pediatrics is a referral-based, specialty practice for ages 0-17. We are not a replacement for a primary care physician or nurse practitioner, but rather, provide consultative care for specific concerns. This means that new issues, unrelated to the issue in the original referral letter, will require a new referral from a primary care provider.

Urgent Appointments or Critical Changes

In addition to their clinic work, all of our doctors provide pediatric services in a variety of settings in the community. This means that their availability in the clinic varies week to week. As such, Red Canoe Pediatrics may not be able to accommodate last minute requests for an urgent appointment or to speak with the pediatrician.

Any issue requiring urgent medical attention should be taken to the nearest emergency department or urgent care clinic.

Prescription Refills

Red Canoe Pediatrics requires 2 -3 weeks notice for all prescription refill requests. Emergency, 1-week refills can be requested from a pharmacist.

Cancellations & No-Show Appointments

Red Canoe Pediatrics requires 48 hours notice of a cancellation. Failure to do so may result in the referral being cancelled and a new referral required. Two cancellations and/or no-shows will result in the referral being sent back to the referring doctor and a new referral will be required in order to be placed back on the waitlist.

Illness on your Appointment Day

If you, your child, or any other family members that would be attending the appointment are ill, please contact our office to rebook your appointment. Please be aware that, while every effort will be made to either convert the appointment to a telephone consultation or rebook the appointment in a timely manner, the next appointment may not be immediately available.

Violent or Abusive Behaviour

Red Canoe Pediatrics will not tolerate violent or abusive behaviour, either in-person or over the phone. We reserve the right to refuse future service for those individuals whose behaviour has been deemed inappropriate.

UBC School of Medicine & Pediatric Residency Program Partner

Red Canoe Pediatrics is a designated UBC teaching site and there may be resident doctors or medical students contributing to your care. Depending on their level of experience, involvement can range from observation to fully completing a consultation and examination. All cases are closely reviewed with the staff pediatrician.
